Basquiat first gained recognition as a part of SAMO, a graffiti tag accompanied by epigrams found on the Lower East Side of New York. Known for using his art as a medium of social commentary, his paintings depicted racism against AfricanAmericans and power structure imbalances to “springboard deeper truths about the individual.”

Basquait died on August 12, 1988 aged 27 in New York City and to this day is renowned as one of the greatest pioneers for African Americans in art.
